After hooking your fish, you may need a sturdy net to lift it from the water.

When fishing with a bigger fly, a slightly different technique is needed. When you feel a fish strike, take in some of the slack from the line. You might need to tug: this force is necessary to set the hook. Then lower the rod’s tip down toward the water, more level than raised. Pull backward on the rod’s butt. Both the rod angle and the backward motion help hook the fish firmly. Reel in some of the slack—if slack is pulled in only by hand, the line might get tangled.

THE FINAL FIGHT

When fishing in a stream or river, make the current your friend. Stand downstream from your catch or pull it in across the current. When trying to reel in a fish that the water is pushing downstream, you’re fighting both the fish and the current.

PLAYING FOR KEEPS

If you’re planning to keep your catch, it becomes even more important to thoroughly tire the fish out before taking it out of the water. Once the fish is out of the water, it’s kinder to kill it quickly than to let it gasp painfully. Remove the hook, and then hit it hard behind the eyes or on the very top of its head.
